With death threats up three-fold against the President since Barack Obama took office, a Biblical excerpt being used as a slogan by radical right-wing opposition to the President is drawing attention for its not-so-subtle insinuation that those placing it on their cars hope that Obama’s term in office ends prematurely–and tragically.
There’s a new slogan making its way onto car bumpers and across the Internet. It reads simply: “Pray for Obama: Psalm 109:8″
A nice sentiment?
Maybe not.
The psalm reads, “Let his days be few; and let another take his office.”
Presidential criticism through witty slogans is nothing new.
Bumper stickers, t-shirts, and hats with “1/20/09″ commemorated President Bush’s last day in office.
But the verse immediately following the psalm referenced is a bit more ominous: “Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.”
This is absolutely not the view of the vast majority of Americans, and no political leaders should be exploiting this. Now is the time for all political sides to come together and unanimously and unequivocally condemn this type of rhetoric, rhetoric that reminds one of the religious extremism we are fighting overseas…before it’s too late.
